Message of Argentine President Alberto Fernández, on the annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust
I want to add my voice, on this day, when we remember one of the darkest stages of humanity. Remembering the Holocaust, listening to the testimonies of survivors, reliving - at least - a small part of those atrocities does not leave us any scope for action. We must early avoid any discriminatory act, which may be the germ of the terrible events, which we already experience. This is an appeal to the morals of humanity, which we cannot ignore. I know that remembering those sufferings is very painful.
Argentina is among the most active members of the International Alliance for the Memory of the Holocaust, this is a tradition of which we should be proud as Argentines. The United Nations established this date so that the memory of the victims was a bridge, helping to fight against all acts of intolerance and discrimination; Since then, Argentina has been implementing policies and programs to support education, memory and research on what was the Holocaust.
Throughout our history we have been a Nation open to the world, we build our community values on a huge mix of cultural and religious traditions. Thus we learned to live in diversity. Today we say that we are a plural society that respects its diversity.
In Argentina we feel the remembrance of the Holocaust in a very intense and very direct way, because in our country many survivors lived and live and year after year - as we do today - we look into the eyes of that terrible experience that is already ours, simply not to forget and not to repeat it. Unfortunately intolerance and political violence were part of the history of our country, a few decades ago and we suffered from State terrorism.
We Argentines learned not to be afraid of memory, a memory that helps us avoid any type of intolerance; memory so that international cooperation allows us to advance, together with other States, in concrete decisions to make this fight a global fight.
I renew, this day, our Government commitment. Count on us. Once again, thank you for continuing to promote the Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, because - without a doubt - it teaches us to build better societies; that we all have peace is my wish. Thank you very much.
